Abstract:

This is the sterile specimen Meehan (1898: 46) lists without any label information. The specimen was found at the American Philosophical Society with other Lewis and Clark collections, and we have no basis to suggest that it is anything other than an authentic field-collected item. The plant was identified as Elymus arenarius L. (Sp. Pl.: 83. 1753) by Erica Armstrong in 1994. Moulton (in press) uses Leymus arenarius (L.) Hochst. (in Flora 31: 118. 1848). It is possible the plant was found along the coast of Oregon near Fort Clatsop, but there is no direct evidence to support this suggestion.
