Abstract:

In 1994, Erica Armstrong, then with the Academy, identified this sheet as Lomatium utriculatum (Nutt.) J. M. Coult. & Rose (in Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. 7: 215. 1900) apparently based on the questionable use of Peucedanum utriculatum Nutt. ex Torr. & A. Gray (Fl. N. Amer. 1: 628. 1840) by Meehan (1898: 29). Moulton (in press) reports the sheet as L. dissectum (Nutt.) Mathias & Const. (in Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 69: 246. 1942). This collection may be the basis for Pursh's (1813: 195) use of the name Phellandrium aquaticum L. (Sp. Pl.: 255. 1753). The specimen label reads "A great horse medicine among the natives" and Pursh states under P. aquaticum "The Indians of that country use it as a medicine in the diseases of horses."
