Meehan (1898: 39) cites the specimen as Oxybaphus nyctagineus (Michx.) Sweet (Hort. Bot. Brit. 1: 334. 1826). The type was collected along the Missouri River just west of the Yankton-Bon Homme Co. line in South Dakota on 1 Sep 1804 (Moulton, 1987a: 469).
