Abstract:

Meehan (1898: 48) lists this as a sterile and unidentified specimen that A. A. Heller annotated as Phlox speciosa just as his paper was going to the printer. It is likely, given the fullness of the K sheet, that Pursh left only a few twigs in Philadelphia, taking the bulk of the collection with him to London. The lectotype was collected along the Clearwater River between Pine Creek and Big Canyon Creek, Nez Perce Co., Idaho, although the exact route along the River is somewhat in doubt (Moulton, 1991: 225). The proposal by Cutright (Lewis & Clark Pioneer. Naturalists: 414. 1969) and by Cronquist (Interm. Fl. 4: 97. 1984) of considering the sterile sheet at PH-LC as the lectotype is fortunately preceded by Wherry's selection which Ewan (Intr. Pursh's Fl. Amer. Sept.: 90. 1979) follows.
