Alt. Title:
Paxistima myrsinites
Creators:
Collected by:Meriwether Lewis & William Clark | Collection date:11/16/1805
Dates:
1805
Abstract:

Pursh provides a detailed description of the new species. Meehan (1898: 20) lists the name as "Pachystima Myrsinites" and Cutright (1969: 412) has "Pachistima myrsinites"; both are common, but incorrect, orthographies for the generic name. Wheeler (in Amer. Midl. Naturalist 29: 792-795. 1943) reviewed the two specimens at PH but declined to designate a lectotype. The lectotype (PH-LC 153) was collected in Pacific Co., Washington, near the Pacific Ocean on 16 Nov 1805. At this time Lewis went to Cape Disappointment and then traveled inland somewhere south of Seaview (Moulton, 1990: 47). The paratype, PH-LC 154, was collected on the Lolo Trail in Idaho Co., Idaho, on 16 Jun 1806. Lewis seems to have collected several plants along a branch of Fish Creek, and this may be one of them (Moulton, 1993: 29-30). (The Lewis & Clark Herbarium Digital Imagery Study Set, ANSP, 2002) On deposit at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia Collected by:Meriwether Lewis & William Clark Collection date:11/16/1805
