Rafinesque was awarded a gold medal for his work. Rafinesque, Constantine S.  Abstract:  Among the most popular of American explorers of the mid-nineteenth century, Kane visited Africa in 1846 aboard the frigate United States. The Kane collection contains a variety of fascinating materials relating to the slave trade and plight of African Americans in the nineteenth century. The papers consist of manuscript materials entitled "Journal of a Trip to Africa," "Slave voyage notebook," and "Whydah slave trade." Also, there are two "Africa: miscellaneous" folders which include an essay on the commercial policy and history of the Gold Coast, along with quantitative data for the years 1820-1843 regarding the repatriation of African Americans to Liberia.

 Abstract:  Of particular interest to scholars of African American history is Parson's research in folklore. Parson produced three major monographs on African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans: Folk-Lore from the Cape Verde Islands (1923), Folk-Lore of the Sea Islands, S.C. (1924), and Folk-Lore of the Antilles, French and English (3 volumes, 1933-1943). Materials which may be of interest in the collection include: correspondence (e.g. with Melville Herskovits, Anson Phelps Stokes, and Franz Boas); several manuscripts -- "Arabic elements in Negro Folk Tales," "Folklore from Georgia," 1934, "Negro Folklore" (5 folders), "Old signs in Alabama" and "Spirituals in Alabama," "Provenience of certain Negro folk-tales" (6 folders) in Series III; and research notes on African American folklore (Series IV).

Brief report by a student of Franz Boas on fieldwork in Florida studying African American folklore, story-telling, religion, and common-held beliefs. Hurston notes that "the bulk of the population now spends its leisure in motion picture theatres or with the phonograph and its blues." King, Louis E. " Negro life in a rural community (#49)." Circa 1931. 166 pages. Anthropological dissertation study of African American life in a rural community during the years 1927-1931. The work is divided into several sections: Background, Family Life, Breadwinning and Shelter, Education, Activities of the Group, Leaving Home, and Comparing Life in Different Rural Communities..
