Date: 1921-2004 | Size: 59 Linear feet

Abstract

The population geneticist Hampton L. Carson spent the major part of his career at Washington University (1949-1963) and the University of Hawaii (1963-1985) investigating the cytogenetics and evolution of Drosophila. As one of the major figures in the Hawaii Drosophila project, he made particularly important contributions to the study of speciation and selective and non-selective evolutionary mechanisms. The Carson Papers (1921-1993) contain correspondence, subject files, manuscripts of published and unpublished works by Carson, papers by colleagues and students, research notes, course materials, photographs, and biographical information, which documents Carson's career as an evolutionary geneticist. The collection is organized into nine series.

Background note

Early years: Hampton Lawrence Carson was born into a distinguished Philadelphia scientific family on November 5, 1914. He is best known as a population geneticist who made substantial contributions to the Drosophila research community. Carson studied zoology at the University of Pennsylvania, where his great-grandfather, Joseph Carson had been a professor of botany. The younger Carson earned his AB under Robert Miller Stabler in 1936, and his PhD in 1943. His dissertation on the cytogenetics of dark-winged fungus gnats, "An Analysis of Natural Chromosome Variability in Sciara impatiens" was well received and was published a year later in the Journal of Morphology. According to Theodosius Dobzhansky, this work provided "definitive cytological proof of the chromosomal situations produced by crossing over in inversion heterozygotes." 1

Academic career: Carson joined the faculty of Washington University in 1943, and rose from assistant professor in 1949 to professor in 1956. In 1951, he was appointed visiting professor of biology at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil and served as a Fulbright Research Scholar in zoology at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Carson began his association with the University of Hawaii in the summers of 1963 to 1967 as a visiting professor and participant in the Hawaiian Drosophila Project, a cooperative venture between the Universities of Texas and Hawaii, which had been initiated by Elmo Hardy and Wilson Stone in 1963 to study Hawaii's 600 unique drosophilid species. In 1970 Carson was appointed Manoa Genetics Professor in the Department of Entomology at Hawaii, where he continued until his retirement in 1985.

Scientific research: Shortly after completing his dissertation, Carson struck up a fruitful collaboration with Harrison Stalker on Drosophila robusta (see Ms. Coll. 23), and from that point on, devoted much of his scientific attention to Drosophila and to elucidating fundamental questions of selection, reproductive isolation, and speciation. Through a careful series of comparative genetic analyses of populations in New Guinea, Australia, the West Indies, Brazil, and many parts of North America, he developed the concepts of heteroselection and homoselection, but his best known research came through the Hawaiian Drosophila Project. After studying the population genetics of eight species endemic to the Hawaiian islands, Carson proposed that speciation in the island chain was tied to the formation of new islands, with new species being slightly different than those in the nearest island, and progressively more different than those in more distant islands. 2 Carson also contributed to the empirical study of effects and quantum selection.

Professional activities: A prolific writer, Carson published over 300 papers between 1934 and 2002 in journals such as Evolution, Genetics, and American Naturalist. He was active in professional societies, serving terms as president of the Society for the Study of Evolution (1971) and the American Society of Naturalists (1973). In 1979 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and in 1985 he won the Leidy Medal for his work with the Hawaiian Drosophila Project. The International Symposium on Genetics, Speciation and the Founder Principle was held in his honor in June 1985, resulting in a festschrift, Genetics, Speciation and the Founder Principle (Oxford Press, 1994). Carson also made contributions to the Drosophila research community through reviewing an impressive number of scientific papers and grant proposals -- formally as a peer reviewer and informally as a colleague -- as well as serving as a sought-after scientific expert, speaker, mentor, and wise confidente to countless organizations, allied professionals, colleagues, students, and members of his community (especially in his later years, as an environmental advocate).

Legacy: Given Carson's considerable expertise, commitment, and deep involvement with population genetics well after his retirement in 1985, he made a lasting impact in the discipline and influenced generations of geneticists. He passed away in 2004 and was thus remembered by his long-time collaborator, UH-M lab mate and friend, Kenneth Y. Kaneshiro: "His work on the speciation and evolution of the Hawaiian Drosophila has been cited extensively and is considered one of the supreme examples of multidisciplinary research. He was instrumental in bringing together a team of experts in the fields of systematics and taxonomy, genetics, ecology, behavior, physiology, botany, geology, biochemistry, and molecular biology to understand the speciation processes within one of the most remarkable group of organisms in the Hawaiian Archipelago. He has made major contributions in each of these areas either by his own work or by bringing to light the relevant work of others. He has moved from one area to another as the need for new approaches arose, and generously encouraged the participation of colleagues with new and appropriate skills."

General note

During processing, the collection was re-foldered and re-housed in acid-free folders and boxes. Metal fasteners were removed and replaced with plastic clips when necessary. A separate listing of torn or severely deteriorated manuscripts and manuscripts that need to have glue and tape removed has been compiled by series and submitted to the Conservation Department.

All newspaper clippings were photocopied onto acid-free paper; the original clippings were then discarded. Other brittle or torn items were also photocopied, and when considered valuable, were retained. Photographs have been interleaved with non-buffered, acid-free paper.

Collection overview

1944-200415.5 linear feet. 31 boxes (#1-31)

Incoming and outgoing handwritten and typescript letters, carbons, telegrams, photographs, manuscript drafts, printed material, ephemera, and postcards generated and collected during Carson's career. The bulk of this series covers the 1960s to the 1990s.

Correspondents include professional colleagues, students, politicians, and publishers. Files for Alan R. Templeton, a population geneticist who was Carson's student, and Marshall Wheeler, a colleague on the Hawaiian Drosophila Project, contain a significant amount of professional correspondence. Med-fly eradication in Hawaii is the subject of most of the correspondence with members of Congress.

Carson and his peers frequently traded manuscript drafts and reprints in the course of communicating with each other, both informally (for advice, mentorship, and/or FYI basis) and formally (as editor, peer reviewer, and/or referee to a publisher). To acknowledge this method of sharing information -- and how Carson associated works-in-progress with authors -- the later accrual has been kept correspondence and drafts together to preserve Carson's method of working and organizing his documentation.

With the 1994 accession, enclosed manuscripts have been removed from this series and placed in Series III (Works by Carson) or Series IV (Works by Others) as appropriate. As with reprints, a photocopy of the title page wwas filed with the original letter (cross-references have been provided).

With 1997 accession, correspondence with other material types have been kept together holistically, and filed with the series that reflects the primary focus of the content (or what a researcher will likely look for when they search). If the gist of the documentation is a collegial conversation, then look in Correspondence. If a written piece is of interest, then look in one of the Works series. Related materials in other formats will likely be in the same folder(s), unless otherwise noted in a "See also" reference.

However, since the collection was cataloged in two phases and Carson's papers were fragmented through multiple donations, some related materials may be filed in more than one place. If a researcher is interested in getting a complete picture, then check both the Correspondence and Works series, in case something fell between the cracks and was filed in another section.

Finally, letters of reference and recommendation are filed under the name of the person who is the subject of the letter.

1951-20045.5 linear feet. 11 boxes (#32-42)

This series is made up of three sections: the first subseries consists of subjects that were of general interest to Carson, but not directly related to his scientific research (which is filed under Series V. Research notes).

The second subseries relates to the professional organizations that Carson belonged to.

The third series relates to the conferences, symposia, and congresses that Carson attended and/or participated in.

Files are arranged alphabetically by title, depending on the nature of the subseries, and items within folders are arranged chronologically. The bulk of the material is dated between the 1960s and 1990s.

Because of the general nature of this subseries, these subject files have multiple authors amd themes represented. The most predominant have been noted with "See also" references. Correspondence, printed material, clippings, ephemera, and non-professional research files are included here.

These records relate to Carson's activities that happened outside of his academic/professional life, but still drew on his scientific expertise. Some were ongoing interests (like ornithology or environmental preservation), or projects he advised on in retirement (such as Chinese Drosophila project), but was not a formal collaborator.

Some published articles are filed here because Carson gathered them together by topic for his personal reference, as opposed to Series IV, Works by Others, which were collected for more professional reasons.

This subseries relates to Carson's involvement with various professional organizations and includes correspondence, minutes, printed materials, and administrative materials related to committees and leadership roles that he served in.

Included in this subseries are conference announcements, meeting programs, trip itineraries, and Carson's handwritten notes on lectures given by participants.

If Carson prepared a conference paper and worked in partnership with organizers and/or co-presenters, then related correspondence and early drafts can be found here.

If a talk was later published as an article or chapter in a book, then later correspondence related to that phase of development and final drafts can be found in Series III, Works by Carson, with cross-references between the two series.

1948-20047 linear feet. 14 boxes (#43-56)See oversize folder

Handwritten and typed notes and drafts of reviews, lectures, articles, and a book. This series is arranged alphabetically by title. For each work, the notes, drafts, and published versions are filed together. Lectures contained here are either single or a short series of talks that Carson gave as guest speaker; lectures used in Carson's courses are in Series VI. Works co-authored by Carson appear in this series.

The works in this series relate primarily to Carson's scholarly and professional output. Topics include his scientific papers on Drosophila research, race and human heredity, the teaching of evolution versus creationism, and the modern synthesis of evolution.

Letters to Brazil (1951) is one of the earliest works included in this series. This unpublished book manuscript comprises letters that Carson wrote to his wife during his extensive stay in Brazil. The letters, modeled after a similar work by his mentor, Theodosius Dobzhansky (see Ser.I, Glick, Thomas), reveal Carson's first impressions and observations of Brazilian life and culture.

Earlier versions of published papers in this series are noted in "See also" references to Series II, Subjects, Subseries C, Conferences; please see this subseries for correspondence related to the early genesis of a work, especially in conjunction with fellow speakers and panels.

-See also Series IX. "Papers on Genetics and Evolution." Bound volumes of Hampton L. Carson reprints, for final versions

1949-20032.5 linear feet. 5 boxes (#57-67)

This series consists of notes, papers, articles, and lectures written by Carson's professional colleagues and students. Some of the articles were reviewed by Carson for publication; others were used by Carson as course materials. Such works were sent directly to him by authors for a formal review (as a supervisor, instructor, advisor, or collaborator), as well as informally (as a mentor, knowledgeable friend, or on a FYI basis).

Given this network of scholarly information, it is evident that Carson had an impact on his profession's literature, such as communicating articles to journals (such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), refereering articles for publication, serving as an editor, peer reviewer, etc.

Given this context, related drafts and correspondence have been filed in this series (if no draft was present with publication-related correspondence see Series I, under the name of the primary contact or publisher -- whichever is more prevalent).

Student works (such as theses, dissertations, etc.) are considered to be quasi-publications and have also been placed in this series. Carson kept in touch with his mentees, who later became established in the field and collaborators. The author best represented in this regard is Alan R. Templeton.

The series is arranged alphabetically by author and then by title. Works authored by more than one individual are filed under the surname of the first person listed in the by-line.

1921-199917 linear feet. 34 boxes (#62-95)

Research-related materials produced by Hampton L. Carson during the course of his scientific experiements, field work, data analysis, and production of visual documentation. Included are working files related to these projects as he and his collaborators translated their findings into work products, such as grant proposals, project outlines, reports, notebooks, proto-drafts of articles, data visualizations, illustrations, and other schematics. Some correspondence may be found here, which is closely related to specific research. For other communications that may be relevant, see also Series I under the correspondent(s) in question.

Contained within this series are two subseries, which are the result of different accruals to the collection being transferred and processed at different times. While the earlier accession relates more to Carson's earlier career, with the later accession kept behind in Hawaii when Carson continued his work in retirement, it may be userful to consult both subseries, if a researcher is seeking a comprehensive picture of the various phases of Carson's scientific career.

Field notes and experimental data from the 1994 accession. Records are filed either by species or geographic location. In this subseries, the genus "Drosophila" is abbreviated "D," when it appears with a species name in a folder title. The bulk of this series concerns Carson's work with D. mercatorum between 1961 and 1985.

Also included here are Carson's personal pocket notebooks (1943-1993), which he used for jotting down information ranging from the logistical details of field trips to observations and ideas about his research.

Research materials in this subseries were transferred in 1997 and 2003. Reflected here is scientific documentation that was produced by Carson and/or his Drosophila Project team. These records have been kept together as one unit and minimally processed to preserve their organic unity and subtle clues relating folders to each other. Out of all of the accessions contributing to the collection, this group seems to have the most coherency, plus it is the most technical.

While it would have been possible to place correspondence from this section in Series I, Carson intentionally produced and organized these files to document the genetics research he conducted his later years, with related scholarly work products. It seems to warrant preservation as is for now, until someone more knowledgeable can further refine the arrangement and description.

The original folders have been retained because there are numerous notes on them, primarily in Carson's hand, as well as different notation systems on the folder tabs. Files have been grouped close to their original scheme, in basic categories with with cross-references. It seems plausible that the core group of files were produced during the Hawaiian Drosophila Project and were later added to, with subsequent research, findings, and input from collaborators. Publications produced during this era can be found in Series III (Works by Carson).

1943-20043 linear feet. 6 boxes (#96-101)

Lectures that Carson gave for courses at Washington University and the University of Hawaii. Course numbers are given on the folder when a particular number appeared frequently in the course materials. Nine files include materials for a course titled Evolution and Genetics (Zoology/Biology 415-416), which Carson apparently team taught with Harrison Stalker for a certain period of time.

This subseries contains materials that could be clearly identified as Carson's academic lectures, course notes, and class outlines relating to his role as a professor. These are materials that were kept in Hawaii during Carson's retirement, when he was frequently invited to serve as a guest speaker at the University of Hawaii, the facilitator of a seminar or panel discussion, etc.

Because of the nature of the records, the subjects have been described in a general way, since Carson often reused these lecture notes and adapted them for the event. They have been minimally processed and are housed in their original folders, to preserve Carson's original notes relating to venues, variations on the talk, etc.

1956-20032.5 linear feet. 5 boxes (#102-106)

The bulk of this collection documents Carson's professional career and cannot be considered his personal papers per se. However, materials were found in the course of processing that were more biographical in nature, especially in the later accessions.

These materials were co-located into this artificial series for ready reference. It includes correspondence, photographs, biographies, an autobiography, bibliographies, awards, certificates, curriculum vitae, and other documentation relating to Carson's life.

1930-20032 linear feet. 4 boxes (#107-110)

A restricted series was created to house records that contain personal identifying information, such as student and personnel records. Files in these subseries are alphabetically organized by initials of the indivdual in question.

There is also a subseries for grant proposals reviewed by Carson. While his Drosophila Project grant proposals have been grouped with Series V, it is because he was often the primary investigator or project lead and knowingly transferred these records to APS and with a deed of gift.

However, other individuals, whose grants were shared with Carson during a peer review process, have not signed over their rights, plus most funding agencies such documentation as prviileged information. These files are arranged alphabetically by grant funder; if there are multiple folders (such as the National Science Foundation), they are further organized by year.

If a researcher was directly involved in the production of a particular group of records, such as the subject of a student file or the writer of a grant proposal, then consult with the History of Science Curator for access to the file in question. Along the same lines, if there is a legitimate need to know and the researcher has obtained permission from the creator of the file(s) to work with the materials in question, it is possible that some arrangement may be made for limited access.

Please see APS policies regarding access and restrictions for further informaiton.

 Series II. Subject files

 Subseries A. General topics

 Series IV. Works by Others

 Series V. Research notes

Subseries A. Earlier accrual (previously processed)

Subseries B. Later accruals (recently processed)

 Series VI. Course materials
1943-20043 linear feet. 6 boxes (#96-101)

Subseries A. Older accruals (previously processed)

Subseries B. Newer accruals (recently processed)

 Series VII. Biographical materials

 Series VIII. Restricted records
